At the School, I met with a nationwide Native success story, a wonderful young artist "Michaela Goade, a Caldecott Medalist and #1 New York Times Bestselling illustrator of “We Are Water Protectors,” also a 2020 Kirkus Prize Finalist. Other books include the New York Times Bestselling “I Sang You Down from the Stars,” “Encounter” and “Shanyaak’utlaax: Salmon Boy,” winner of the 2018 American Indian Youth Literature Award for Best Picture Book."
My little granddaughter points with her open hand like in Price Is Right, saying "That's Ap'i and Girl!"
I'm so proud to have met Michaela Goade who informed me how a network of local and regional Native groups got together and promoted her beautiful illustrations as well other artists in Southeast Alaska. See her website: https://www.michaelagoade.com/
They remind me of a realm in the style of a Native story. Visionary in her use of watercolor washes, a pattern of color flowing together in a beautiful array that even little Stephanie's little imagination is transfixed into another world out there. "Coolest", she said.
There are many new and young artists in our own region that they can also flourish to become famous like this young lady. It is also my dream to see more collaborative stories from our region become part of the curriculum.
