In ancient times, Ellam Yua held a special place in the cosmos. As the Universe’s Person, he governed the sky, the heavens, and our very consciousness. His benevolence extended to the natural world, providing fish and wildlife for sustenance.
The ancestors revered the animals that willingly sacrificed themselves during each hunting and harvesting season. With profound respect, they preserved the food and utilized every part. Carved masks were decorated with animal parts. Additionally, they hung carvings of animals, birds and fish in the Qas’giq sod house, suspended from sinew strings at its four corners. At the center of this arrangement stood a doll symbolizing Ellam Yua.
During the festivals, the strings were pulled rhythmically to dance and celebrate with thanks. Afterward, the animals returned to their creator, recounting how well humans had treated them. In response to this mutual respect and love, Ellarpiim Yua granted permission for continued celebrations throughout the new year. The Camai Festival in Bethel recounts this practice.
