  • During the Alaskan summer, mosquitoes are a relentless nuisance, targeting every bit of exposed skin and sometimes even piercing through clothing. The Yup’ik and Cup’ik communities in western Alaska have humorously incorporated this annoyance into their dances, mimicking the frantic swatting and scratching during festivals.

Interestingly, mosquitoes play a vital role in the Alaskan ecosystem. Alongside fish, birds, and other animals, they contribute significantly to the intricate web of life. We coexist with these tiny creatures, benefiting from the interconnected existence they help sustain. In this shared dance of life, we are truly united and dancing with the mosquitoes during the summer.
