  • This recounts the time I had to surf waves at Nunivak Island, heading home from fish camp in a small 18-foot red aluminum boat. The Lund Boat, red along its sides, carried me on a 45-mile journey from the fish camp to Mekoryuk.

Aware of the weather’s unpredictability, I placed the gear, dried fish, and heavier items toward the middle, securing them with a tarp.

Suddenly, the wind picked up, and white caps began rolling in my direction. As the waves grew closer to land, they became enormous. To avoid the thundering white caps, I found myself literally surfing the waves in this small aluminum skiff. With a modest 40-horsepower outboard motor, I climbed and surfed down waves, heading away from the land.

Then I noticed my gas tank was nearing empty. I intended to switch to another tank with my fuel line, but realized the fuel tank was different from the one I was using. I shouted at the top of my lungs, lamenting that I was the only parent left for my children. Of course, that was selfish of me. I fought for my life, running on fumes.

I prayed harder than ever before, yelling out loud to the Creator to grant me a chance to reach the shore with calm waters. I became acutely aware of everything around me—my fragile body, the waves, wind, and white caps. Finally, I managed to reach a tiny harbor behind the waves.

I anchored the boat and removed my life jacket, drenched in sweat. I checked the gas tank and tipped it upside down—nothing. I disconnected the fuel line and opened both ends—empty. I tried to restart the engine, but there was no response. I sat down, mouth agape, in bewilderment that I had been running on empty all that time.

This experience strengthened my belief in the power of prayer. With all the obstacles we face in life, similar events will challenge everyone. To avoid harm, we must always keep in prayer, understanding our fragility in life’s uncertainties. We must face events head-on, knowing our Creator is always there. Everything comes to pass. My task is to find steadfast faith that prevails in these challenges, every day, every moment of each breath.
